British Virgin Islands

Located in the north eastern Caribbean to the east of Puerto Rico, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) form part of a volcanic archipelago and are home to some spectacular areas of unspoilt paradise. There are four main inhabited islands; Virgin Gorda, Anegada, Jost Van Dyke and Tortola, which is home to the capital ‘Road Town’ and much of the population.

Deemed one of the safest places in the Caribbean, this British Overseas Territory has positioned itself as a centre of excellence for global business and finance. It has one of the most prosperous economies in the Caribbean.

Outside Tortola and the capital, Virgin Gorda is popular with foreign buyers, with its National Park and attractive North Sound. Foreigners need to apply for a license to buy in the BVI, although like many Caribbean countries, the Government here welcomes investment from overseas buyers. The license is a Non-Belonger Land Holding License (NBLHL) and it can take up to nine months, obtained from the Ministry of Natural Resources. There is a fee and it does not give resident status.

The BVI is a recognised location for favourable taxation, including 0% corporation or income tax and no capital gains tax. However, there are taxes here such as payroll tax, social security, customs duties and a nominal Land tax. There is Stamp duty on property transactions – 12% for foreign buyers.
